Ok, it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel, hope on the horizon, etc. Have just received the following ad for what looks like Australian attempt to produce Harpers monthly type publication, if a little unfortunately named:
I'd like to tell you about The Monthly, a new national magazine of politics, society and the arts. The first issue comes out in May.
The Monthly will be published by Schwartz Publishing, the people who bring you Black Inc books and Quarterly Essay. It will be intelligent and independent, inquisitive and entertaining. It will give space to long essays and thoughtful reviews, to investigative journalism and zingy reportage, to bold photography and a cool design. It won't moan, or earbash, or take itself too seriously.
Our starting line-up of writers includes Helen Garner, John Birmingham, Margaret Simons, Gideon Haigh, Amanda Lohrey, Chloe Hooper, Malcolm Knox, Robert Manne, Don Watson, Nicholas Shakespeare.
To receive a free copy of the first issue, please visit our website at http://www.themonthly.com.au
We believe The Monthly is the voice many Australians have been waiting for. We would like to get the first issue into the hands of as many like-minded people as possible. So please forward this email to as many of your friends as you think might be interested, and we will also send them the first issue free.
Also, today you will of course have noted that the Nation has at last been put out of its misery with Oscar honours going to Cate Blanchett ...personally I thought her voice was maybe a semitone higher than Hepburn's in The Aviator (and it was distracting not to have Hepburn played by herself). But the Oscar was in other ways a relief (at least it didn't go to the insufferable Nic or Gwynneth some such person like that...not that they were nominated this time). Now, as a Nation, hopefully we can move on from this...
Oh dear, when I hear the name "The Monthly" I rather adolescently think of menstruation.
Gosh! Helen Garner! Don Watson! How brave!
(I quite like Gideon Haigh though.)

ha ha!
Re: the monthly -- so does everyone! That's why the Women's Weekly didn't change their name when they started coming out on a monthly basis.
Nice to see you're back on deck again!
