I once hung out at a conference with William Yang, the photographer. I met him in the coffee queue at morning tea time, and after that, we kept on meeting up. I think we both felt a bit out of place at that conference for various reasons. At the time, I didn't really realise whom he was -- he was just a nice Asian photographer guy, managing to put a nicer spin on the goings-on at the conference than what I was. Later, when I saw a couple of his shows, I realised he was a major artiste... One thing I really like about his photography is the emphasis he gives to the ordinary, the banal things of life, like the meal he ate with so-and-so or the road they drove on to get to such-and-such a place.
